From Raw Wool to Coded Geometry
The Wool
Every piece begins with wool sourced from the Atlas Mountains — the same terrain that has supplied M'rirt weavers for generations. This is not commercial-grade wool selected for uniformity. It's chosen for character: natural variations in texture and tone that give each rug its depth, and a density that has kept these pieces warm and durable through Atlas winters for over a century of technique.
The wool is washed, carded, and hand-spun before it ever touches a loom — a process that alone can take days, done long before the actual weaving begins.
The Loom
Our pieces are hand-knotted on a traditional vertical loom, the same type used in M'rirt for generations. No mechanized shortcuts. No power tools. Every knot is tied by hand, one at a time, by an artisan who has spent decades learning to read a pattern the way others read text.
0.00mm tolerance. This isn't a marketing phrase — it's a working standard. The geometry of SAOUDY 18™ leaves no room for improvisation once the pattern is set. Every line, every angle, has to land exactly where the system dictates.
The Process
Design — The geometry is planned first: proportions calculated under the SAOUDY 18™ system before a single knot is tied.
Dyeing — Wool is dyed in small batches, achieving the Pan-African palette (red, green, yellow, black) that defines each piece.
Knotting — Row by row, knot by knot, on the vertical loom. A single rug can take weeks to complete, depending on size and pattern density.
Washing & Finishing — Once knotting is complete, the piece goes through a traditional wet-wash process that sets the wool, deepens the colors, and softens the texture into its final form.
The Silent K — The final signature is sculpted directly into the wool — a mark that can't be added after the fact. It has to be woven in.
Why It Takes Time
A Kush & Knots piece can't be rushed. The wool needs to be prepared properly. The geometry needs to be exact. The wash needs to be done right. When we tell a collector a piece is still finishing, it's because skipping that step would mean handing over something that isn't actually finished — and we don't do that.
The Hands Behind Every Knot
Every Sovereign Selection piece is hand-knotted by my father and by Malika, among the artisans of M'rirt carrying this technique forward through generations, in partnership with the Thanakra Oufous cooperative. This is not outsourced production. It's a direct line from the wool to the finished piece, with no factory in between.
